Bad breath (halitosis) may be caused by various oral conditions where the sufferer has a very foul breath, sometimes not even aware of. Some of the most common causes of halitosis are bacteria in the mouth, poor oral hygiene, and smoking, among others. To cure bad breath, it is important to know the root cause, which very often will start with a good oral hygiene.

Here are a few tips to stop bad breath with a good oral hygiene:

Brush your teeth regularly.

It may not be necessary to mention this as it is learned as our teeth start growing. But you would not believe how many people forget to brush their teeth at least twice per day and if possible after every meal. As mentioned above bad breath is caused by bacteria in the mouth; if you brush after every meal, the bacteria will not have the time to start their 'work' on your teeth. Also do not forget to clean your tongue as bacteria can get stuck on there too.

Drink a lot.

Water preferably. Keep your mouth wet almost all the time. Know that bacteria grow faster when the mouth is dry.

Floss your teeth.

Bacteria can get in every corner of your mouth and between your teeth is their favorite. Brushing alone does not get rid of food that gets stuck between teeth. Make sure that you keep your dental floss handy. Along with the floss it is a good idea to have a mouth wash.

Bad breath is not funny to live with. If you have tried all the tips above and still have a foul breath, I would suggest you to see your dentist as your problem may be more complicated.

Many people assume an association between teeth and bad breath (halitosis). In many instances they are right: some cases of bad breath are associated with poor dental hygiene, dental cavities, and gum disease (though many are not). Fortunately, when oral malodor is caused by these dental problems, the problem is relatively easy to correct. Like other causes of oral malodor, the unpleasant smell is the result of bacterial multiplication in the mouth.

The role of dental cavities in halitosis usually begins with poor dental hygiene and a lack of regular professional dental care. If you don't brush and floss your teeth regularly, plaque forms on the outside surfaces due to the activities of oral bacteria. Plague that remains on the teeth causes a buildup of hard tartar, also teeming with oral bacteria. In additional, food particles caught between the teeth are broken down by bacteria. Many of these bacteria produce unpleasant smelling gases as byproducts of metabolism, and some break down tooth enamel. Thus they cause both decaying teeth and bad breath.

Tooth decay, of course, results in cavities-holes in the teeth in which more food particles become trapped, bacteria gain entrance and multiply, and healthy tissues break down. 2. Cure bad breath by giving the dog lots of drinking water to drink. Drinking water is not only good for health but will also decrease the chances of bad breath. 3. Treat bad breath by using something that will serve as a dental floss for the dog. Of course, flossing will be next to impossible for a dog. However, we need to make sure that the food particles stuck in its teeth are taken out. This is important because the food particles trapped in the dog's teeth are breeding grounds for bacteria. A hard biscuit or treat will do the trick. As the dog chews on the hard biscuit, it will scrape the food particles in its teeth.

Also, the tartar deposits in the teeth will be taken out. This can be done on a regular basis to get rid of the food particles trapped in the dog's teeth. When the dog chews on something hard, make sure that you do not use anything that might do more damage than good. Some bones may actually not be good for them. An example of this harmful bone would be the chicken's bone.

4. Believe it or not, you can cure a dog's bad breath with gum. Chewing gum will stimulate the dog's mouth into cleaning out the food particles and plaque in the teeth. Many animal food product companies have produced different types of chewing gums for dogs. Chewing gum is also great at hiding the problem temporarily especially if the smell has gone from bad to worse. It is also important to look for a gum that is free of sugar. To me, this is really going over the top, and I don't recommend giving your dog chewing gum of any type.

5. Brush your dog's teeth. Keep the teeth clean and free from plaque just by brushing them regularly.

If observed carefully, these tips will save a dog owner some trouble and expensive trips to the vet. And your favorite pooch will always smell fresh.
